Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official commented the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
